Introduction to Teaching MBSR Live Online: An Intensive for New MBSR Teachers
with Rebecca Eldridge

“East Coast Mindfulness is offering an online course to train MBSR teachers to teach the MBSR curriculum online. I have every confidence that this valuable professional training can amplify and deepen your skillset and personal practice as an MBSR teacher, as well as the technical support necessary to extend your reach through the internet.”

Jon Kabat-Zinn, Founder of MBSR and author of Full Catastrophe Living

NOTE: This training is for MBSR teachers who have taught 1, 2, or 3 (possibly more) cycles of MBSR. If you are an experienced MBSR teacher, please see our advanced training, Train to Teach MBSR Live Online, which can result in certification through East Coast Mindfulness to teach MBSR Live Online.

Introduction to Teaching MBSR Live Online is a 3-day, 27-hour intensive during which early MBSR teachers identify what is essential in each class of an MBSR course (orientation, All Day, and 8 classes), and gain practical experience in expressing the essence of those classes through the online format. Emphasis is on finding your own voice and online style, while honoring the rigor of the curriculum and the needs of your participants.

Using Jon Kabat-Zinn's original MBSR curriculum and documents published after it, as well as your previous MBSR teacher training experience, your own MBSR teaching experience, and your personal meditation practice, you will:

  1. teach an orientation and other parts of the curriculum online to your colleagues and trainer,
  2. give feedback, and receive feedback from, your training colleagues about teaching online, and
  3. receive feedback from the trainer about your online teaching.
To support your learning, you will receive a short manual with guidelines for teaching an online MBSR orientation. You will also spend up to 6 hours each week between our three sessions working on your own to complete practical assignments to help you teach online. Note: the classes in this program will not be recorded.

Acceptance into the training is by application. Training is capped at 4 participants to ensure time for exploration and questions. This course will be taught by Rebecca Eldridge, who trained faculty at the Center for Mindfulness at UMASS Medical School to teach their first online MBSR course.

During this training you will—

  • Consider what is essential in each of the 10 classes of an MBSR course, and what adaptations need to happen to convey the essential online
  • Explore your authentic, unique way to bring the MBSR curriculum alive online
  • Teach aspects of the MBSR curriculum online (including an online orientation) to your fellow trainees
  • Give and receive feedback to yourself and other trainees around teaching online

At the end of this training you will be able to—

  • Identify essential elements of the 10 sessions in an MBSR course
  • Demonstrate beginning competency in teaching MBSR Live Online
  • Authentically express interactive and didactic teaching through the online platform
  • Connect with your online MBSR teaching colleagues for continued support and learning

Required Technology and Preparation:

  • High-speed internet connection

  • Please, no phones

  • Join on a computer that has a full-sized screen on which you can see at least 25 Zoom participants, without having to scroll

  • Ensure that your computer is situated on a stable surface (instead of resting on your lap, etc.)

  • Video and microphone capability (so that you can be seen and heard)

  • A place for practice that allows for being undisturbed

  • Current version of Zoom installed

Already teaching MBSR? We also offer a 9-session, 20+ hour Group Mentorship program for MBSR teachers of all experience levels: whether you’ve taught 1 or 100 MBSR courses. We explore assumptions about:

• what MBSR is and what it is not
• what “good teaching” of MBSR is and isn’t
• your personal and professional experience of teaching MBSR
• your personal meditation practice, and more

This program is limited to 4 participants

Rebecca served as an MBSR Teacher and MBSR Teacher Trainer at the Center for Mindfulness at UMass Medical School, creating and training their teaching faculty to deliver their first online MBSR course in 2016. She is certified as a calibrated rater for assessing MBSR teaching, and is a member of the International Mindfulness Integrity Network, a worldwide group of teacher trainers exploring ethics and standards of mindfulness training programs. Beyond teaching MBSR and training MBSR teachers, Rebecca works with organizations to develop and deliver mindfulness programs for living with more authenticity, resilience, and joy; and meditation guidance for promoting restorative rest and sleep. Her personal practice is guided by her teacher, Pema Chödrön, and she was featured giving meditation instruction in two courses taught by Pema Chödrön: Making Friends with Yourself and How to Live with Compassion and Courage. She also loves growing things—from fruits, vegetables, and flowers; to a personal meditation practice that doesn’t fizzle out; to communities that welcome and encourage people as they are.
