Meditation calls on us to be with ourselves gently and precisely; this is no small feat. The language and heartfulness of poetry can help support this inner work, pointing us back to our inherent courage, tenderness, and ability to be with what is true for us in the moment, and to give voice to that experience.

Over the course of 4 weeks, we will practice meditation in different forms, including meditative silence. We will listen to poetry and try our hand at writing it, as a liberating practice free of self-judgment. No prior writing experience is required. You might leave the sessions having written much or very little. You might leave not even sure that what you’ve written is poetry. You are welcome to show up exactly as you are and see what unfolds.

There will be opportunity for sacred sharing in a safe, supportive container, while also holding space to simply sit and listen to others. This is not a “writer’s workshop” where you will receive advice on how to change your writing (or yourself); mainly, we will be witness to the unique expression of each others’ lives. There’s no better meditation seat I can imagine taking.

There is always the potential in a group such as this that you will be seen in ways you normally aren’t—as imperfect, vulnerable, shaky even; as perfectly human; as a person who wants to live and love fully without embarrassment or regret; as brilliant. If this risk (and opportunity) is calling to you, please join us. It won’t be the same gathering without you.

The poetry writing will begin before we ever meet, with suggested brief readings and the co-creation of a poem via email. Once together, we will use this collective expression as an entry point into further exploration of what it means to recognize your truth and express it as only you can.

Each session will be an invitation to pause, practice, reflect, and write; speak and be listened to; appreciate silence; and simply be in the good company of one another.

Engaging a consistent process at each session will provide a structured freedom to practice, reflect, write, and be together.

Here’s the process, with approximate times—

  1. Landing silent sit: 5 min.
  1. Brief check-in from each person: 10 min.
  1. Mindfulness practice to invite all we brought with us (emotions, etc.): 15 min.
  1. Silent reflection and writing, on your own, together: 55 min.
  1. Optional sharing, deep listening: 20 min.
  1. Brief check-out from each person: 10 min.
  1. Closing sit: 5 min.

As a participant, you agree to—

  • Attend and participate in every session.
  • Maintain a mindfulness practice that fits your life between sessions.
  • Use a computer that allows all participants to be seen on one screen without having to scroll. No phones, please.

  • Ensure that your computer is situated on a stable surface (instead of resting on your lap, etc.).

  • Enable the video and microphone capability (so that you can be seen and heard).

  • Use a place for practice that allows for being undisturbed.

  • Have the current version of Zoom installed.
